What is LASIK surgery?
The term LASIK is actually an acronym for a much longer title: Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. There are several ways to accomplish LASIK vision correction, including with a microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (laser device). During the LASIK surgery, a flap is cut into the cornea, with a hinge left at one corner. The flap is folded back to expose the stroma (middle part of the cornea) and laser pulses are then used to reshape the tissue as needed to correct vision conditions. At the conclusion of LASIK surgery, the flap is replaced and your eye heals in a matter of a few days.
